Do you remember where you were when..

President John F Kennedy was assassinated? I don' t, but then I was only four at the time.. But over the weekend I read again that people always remembered what they were doing when they heard the news and it made me wonder what events had had a similar effect on me. So far, I've come up with the following events, when I can visualise the exact moment .
- The first moon landing on 20 July 1969. ( I sat holding my breath, convinced that an alien would emerge from behind a rock);
- John Lennon's assassination on 8 December 1980;
- The news that Princess Diana had been in a car crash and was injured (31 August 1997);
- 9/11 - 11 September 2001,
There have been other events that I can recall clearly, but no others that I can see as if the moment was frozen in time. What about you?

I wasn't born when the first three events took place, but for the last two events I was in Belgium and Enfield respectively.

i remember them all but not sure what i was doing at the time...mind you the moon landing was on the telly so i was sat in front of that...

  Was it a small black and white telly with fuzzy lines? If so, you sure you weren't sat next to me?

    Mind you whist watching it a relative who was in their 60's at the time said "I always knew we would fly to the moon one day, but I never ever dreamed that I would be able to watch it"...that has allways stuck with me...

      Yes, it must have seemed incredible to a generation that only 20 or so years earlier believed that Spitfires were about as fast as it got.

I remember the following

1. John Lennon's assassination - Made me stop and think, even as a nine year old. I was a big fan at the time, though my views have changed over the years.

2. The Challenger Shuttle disaster, Jan 28, 1986 - I was watching it live on telly at home and a wave of disbelief was followed by a greater wave of horror as the images unfolded before my eyes. My immediate thoughts were for the families of the astronauts and the pupils of Christa McAuliffe, who no doubt were watching at the same time.

3. The sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise, Mar 6, 1987 - My brother would have been on that ferry if it hadn't been for his friend not getting up early enough to catch it on their way back from a late skiing holiday.

4. The death of Dianna, Princess of Wales, 31 Aug, 1997 - I'd just got home from the pub when mum told me, and to my eternal shame, I thought she was joking. I just could not believe it.

5. 9/11, 2001 - watched the events unfolding at the pub at lunchtime. I never did get round to wishing my brother happy birthday that day. It just didn't seem right to bother with trivia when there was stuff like that happening.

6. 7/7 bombings in London, 2005 - I was at work with a hangover wondering how many people in London were waking up with hangovers, London having won the Olympic bid the day before.

  I'd forgotten about the Challenger Shuttle Disaster. That was so horrific, for exactly the reasons you said. And I was returning from holiday on 7/7 - I flew into City of London airport and wasn't sure if I'd get home that day. Very scary!

I don't remember any really except 9/11 and 7/7, so I must be one of the exceptions to that saying! Either that or I've got a terrible memory.

Oh I think I remember most of them!
The one I remember most was Dianas death. This may sound selfish but the 8th September was my nans 80th birthday all the grandchildren had planned a gigantic party for her and it was due to be held on 6th Sept and that was of course the day of Dianas funeral. We were really unsure if we needed to cancel the party or what....but we decided that this party had taken months to plan and get everyone together that it needed to go ahead.

When they landed on the moon I can remember my grandad tutting and saying that no way could anyone have gone to the moon. He was so sure that it was all being flimed in a studio at the BBC. Bless him!

  The right decision re your gran's birthday, I reckon. A bit of cheer was needed, especially seeing her sons trying to cope with grief with millions of eyes on them. And I've heard that there is a conspiracy theory that says men haven't yet landed on the moon, and 'the landing' was filmed in a US desert - so maybe your grandad was right!

While I remember all the events you describe as occurring, the only one I remember in situ of a circumstance is the announcement of the death of JFK. I have often wondered whether that was due to time of my life in which it all happened.

  With my family in Devon, huddled around a very small black and white TV (which we hadn't had long so it was doubly exciting) with my two-year old sister having a tantrum (probably because she couldn't watch Bill and Ben!)

The Apollo 11 moon landing is the earliest event that I can recall clearly for which I can link it to a specific date. I was six at the time. (I was alive when JFK was shot, but only 14 months old, and so I do not recall the incident.)
